Ø  Present government has the honour that Punjab Chief Minister, Ch. Pervaiz Elahi set up a separate department in the province for Information Technology which took comprehensive steps for promotion of information technology in the society and computerization of government departments.
Ø  Promotion of IT culture in the province is the top priority of the government. 32 kanal of land was deputed during the last fiscal year for setting up software technology park which was inaugurated at Ferozpur Road by Punjab Chief Minister Ch. Pervaiz Elahi where construction work is going on under the supervision of Punjab Information Technology Board.
Ø  Various projects have been completed under IT Department which include Agriculture Department, Bait-ul-Maal Committees, Punjab Public Services Commission, Arms Licensing, Land Revenue Management (Pilot Projects for Gujrat and Rahim Yar Khan), computerization of registration deeds (pilot projects of Sialkot and Lahore), Motor Transport Management Information System, Computerized Driving License and route permits.
Ø  A number of projects are speedily being completed with required professional skill in Information Technology Department which include Prisons Department, Law & Parliamentary Affairs Department, Crimes Investigation, Management Information System for Hospitals, Excise & Taxation Department, Computerization of Punjab Provincial Cooperative Bank, Lahore Van Project, Punjab Internet Data Ware House, Computerization of Property Tax System, Board of Revenue, Computerization of Land Record, Wildlife Department, Computerization of Labour & Health Departments and training of government employees.
Ø  A huge amount of Rs.1250 million has been allocated for Information Technology during the fiscal year 2007-08 out of which Rs.810 million on Punjab Information Technology Board projects and Rs.440 million on I.T. Department projects. Rs.253 million would be received from foreign aid.
Ø  Work on important project of Punjab Internet is underway under which DCOs of 35 districts and tehsil offices of 144 tehsils of the province would be linked with the IT Department at Aiwan-e-Iqbal whereas under Lahore Van Project, facilities like provincial departments, digital links, e-mail, I.P. telephone and video conference would be available to the provincial departments.
Ø  The present government started Phase-II project for Land Record Computerization for Lahore, Gujrat and Rahim Yar Khan while by the end of previous fiscal year, digitization of 229 topics of district Gujrat and 811 topics of Rahim Yar Khan and the experiment of issuance of electronic ‘Fard’ has also been made. In the days to come, ‘patwari’ culture would be eliminated and any person can obtain the record of his property by sitting at home while transparent system of business activities would also be introduced.
Ø  Management Information System for hospitals is being prepared and computerization is being made of King Edward Medical College, Services Hospital, Allama Iqbal Medical College and Multan institute of Cardiology under which record of patients of the hospitals and the progress of dispensaries can be made computerized.
Ø  With the efforts of Punjab I.T. Department, the record of criminals belonging to terrorists and extremists organizations is being computerized through Crimes Investigation Department. Likewise database of prisoners in prisons and finger print system is under completion while a network is being prepared for online sale of the produce being prepared in jails.   Phase-II project for issuance of arms licenses and its computerization has been launched.
Ø  Punjab Chief Minister Ch. Pervaiz Elahi inaugurated the project of computerized number plates for Motor Transport Management Information System under which various computerized number plates are being issued to different vehicles and after successful launching of this project in Lahore, this project is being launched in other cities of the province. Last, month, Provincial Minister for Information Technology Abdul Aleem Khan and Minster for Transport Pir Ghulam Mohay-ud-Din were chief guest in a function held for issuance of computerized route permits to the commercial vehicles which will benefit the transporters and they will get route permit within 24 hours.
Ø  Information Technology Department is playing an active role for computerization of government departments in the province. Special emphasis is being made by the IT department for promotion of IT and effective coordination among government departments. For this purpose, government employees are being given training at district level and different training projects of IT Department in various districts are being run successfully.
Ø  A project is under-consideration for computerization of property tax of big five districts of the province at a cost of Rs.60 million which include Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Gujranwala and Rawalpindi. IT Department will prepare software, networking, infrastructure and hardware for computerization of property tax of the said cities and 42% of the work on project would supposedly be completed during the current fiscal year.
Ø  The present government is fully aware of the increasing trend of computerization, modern technology and progress of the current era and Information Technology is directly and indirectly actively participating to accelerate the pace of development in Punjab according to the vision 2020 of Punjab Chief Minister Ch. Pervaiz Elahi. To achieve the goal, provincial government departments are being mutually linked through modern and professional services which will enhance functioning of the government departments and standardize facilities would be made available to the masses.
