The Punjab province has an extensive expanse of fisheries resources with great development potential, as assessed by national and international experts. The major resources are rivers, canals, reservoirs, lakes, water-logged areas, and village ponds, etc. covering a total area of about 3.00 million hectares (7.5 million acres).
Functions
Major functions of the Fisheries Department are:
· Extension services/fish farming/aquaculture development.
· Conservation, Management and development of natural resources.
· Production of fish seed under controlled conditions.
· Research activities
· Training activities
Management of Fisheries Resources
· Besides conservational measures, proper management strategy is adopted for the fishing, harvesting, uplift of socio-economic conditions of fishermen communities etc.
Fish Farming/Extension Services.
· The fish culture activities have considerably increased in the recent years and the total area under fish culture in public and private sector. At present, in the private sector about 38,000 acres have been taken under fish culture. In order to diversify improved techniques, mass motivation campaign is being organized through the media and as a result many progressive farmers have established fish farms on commercial scale.
· The private farmers are provided complete advisory services, from the preparation of feasibility reports (with complete financial analysis) to pond design/construction, farm management, fish seed stocking, feed, fish health, disease prevention and control, soil and water analysis, fish growth monitoring and allied technical disciplines. The facility of soil and water analysis is being provided at Fisheries Research and Training Institute, Lahore and Training Sub-Centers at Rawalpindi and Bahawalpur. Frequent workshops are organized to disseminate improved aquaculture techniques. The annual growth rate of fish farming during the last few years has been assessed about 10 to 12%
For the mobilization of the private sector, following facilities are being provided to the farmers:
a) Free technical advisory service on site selection and farm designing preparation of feasibility report.
b) Arrangements of credit facilities for fish farming through agriculture development bank of Pakistan and small industries corporation.
c) Supply of irrigation water at reduced rates.
d) Provision of bulldozer on agriculture rate by the agriculture department on the recommendations of fisheries department. Supply of fish seed of culturable fishes.
e) Free training on fish culture techniques to the farmers in fisheries training institute, Lahore.
f) Subsidized agriculture tariff on use of electricity for tube wells for fish farming by WAPDA.
